Laboratory analysis can be conducted as stand-alone contract work or as an integral part of a broader project consultancy service. Laboratory Services
We offer a range of laboratory services encompassing all the necessary stages required for the application of genetic techniques to wildlife research. Our primary techniques and services are listed here. Please contact us for details of other laboratory analyses such as AFLP and Real-Time PCR.
Supply of preservation chemicals and consumables
We provide a range of tissue preservation chemicals and storage consumables for all sample types e.g. blood, feathers, tissue, scat.
Long-term storage of tissue and DNA
We offer space in industrial –80 freezers for the long-term storage of samples.
DNA extraction
We use a range of DNA extraction protocols and chemistries dependant upon customer requirements and tissue types. All work is undertaken in our specialist DNA Extraction Unit (see Research Facilities for details).
DNA quantification
Based on either Picogreen or Nanodrop systems, we can quantify and normalize purified DNA.
PCR primer design
We specialize in the development of oligonucleotide primers with optimal binding properties for the amplification of specific loci.
PCR amplification of specific genes
Utilizing PCR thermocyclers that range in capacity from 41,000 samples (Duncan machine) to 96 samples, we can meet all PCR throughput requirements, either within larger analysis projects or as a stand-alone PCR service.
Real-Time PCR
In addition to standard and high-throughput PCR, we also offer real-time PCR analysis services enabling DNA quantification and end point analysis of SNP assays.
DNA sequencing of mtDNA and nuclear genes
Gene sequences are resolved using an Applied Biosystems 3130xl automated sequencer.
Microsatellite development
We have the facilities to develop microsatellite markers for a variety of taxa.

High-throughput SNP genotyping - New!
Wildlife DNA Services now provides a high-throughput SNP genotyping service (up to 100,000 genotypes per day). Assays can be pre-designed or designed in-house based on sequence data. Chemistries include TaqMan and an in-house assay.
Consultancy Services
Our consultancy service can be seen as individual stages occurring before and after the laboratory work. WDNAS can be involved at any stage as required.
Project Design
Any project that includes genetic analysis needs to incorporate genetic criteria from the outset. Tepnel advises on experimental design to make the most effective use of limited resources.
Sampling
We provide guidelines on how best to sample and store different types of material for the future recovery of DNA.
Data Analysis
We analyse the laboratory data using the latest phylogenetic and population genetic software to calculate different measures of genetic variation and identify specific individuals.
Result Interpretation
As the majority of our work is for non-geneticists, we present the results in terms that can be clearly understood and in the context of the original question.
Reporting
Tepnel provides written reports documenting the laboratory and analysis procedures, as well as the project conclusions. Where appropriate, we can prepare reports for publication, but we do not retain ownership of results produced under contract.
