Trace evidence in serious crime investigation

The use of non-human DNA as evidence in criminal investigations has traditionally been associated with wildlife crimes, such as animal persecution, illegal trade, or in rare cases, animal attacks on humans.

The non-human analysis team at Tepnel is now applying such forensic techniques to serious criminal investigations in which trace evidence from animals and plants can provide information that helps to reconstruct the movement and activity of the suspect or victim.

Current research is focusing on the level of information that can be obtained from DNA evidence left by livestock and companion animals, particularly dogs and cats.  The techniques involve the analysis of hairs, saliva and blood targeting different types of DNA present in animals cells.

A single hair follicle contains sufficient DNA to perform forensic genetic analysis
