Analytical Facilities

All forensic analysis takes place in a secure laboratory unit designed specifically for genetic casework.  Each stage of the analytical process including DNA extraction, pre-PCR preparation and PCR amplification take place in physically separated pressurized laboratories to minimize contamination risk.  Specific tests are provided in compliance with ISO17025 regulation and the unit itself is controlled under a GLP/GXP quality management system.

Data Management
All data relating to the processing of samples is currently recorded through a custom-built genetic database, the Genetic Data Management System (GDMS).  A fully integrated LIMS system is being brought online for all forensic casework.

Extraction Facility
Our extraction lab is designed to allow DNA recovery from forensic samples and low-yield project samples. The positive pressure room is maintained as a PCR-free environment. We operate a strict non-transfer policy between labs for equipment and chemicals. All DNA extractions take place within UV sterilized, HEPA filtered, laminar-flow fume cupboards.

Pre-PCR and PCR preparation rooms

The Pre-PCR room is a DNA-free zone for reagent preparation.  The PCR preparation room is an amplicon-free room for PCR preparation.  Both rooms operate operate under positive pressure and strict barrier controls.

Sequencing / Genotyping Facility
Operating under negative pressure, our main analysis laboratory houses:
  • Applied Biosystems 3130xl capillary sequencer - IQOQ compliant
  • MJ Research thermocycler suite
  • Applied Biosystems7500 and 7900 RT-PCR machine
