Quantitative detection of Caseins/Milk Proteins in foods

Intended Use:
Casein, the major protein constituent of milk, comprises _25% of milk solids and _80% of milk proteins, the balance of the proteins being made up primarily of ß-Lactoglobulin. The BioKits Casein Assay Kit is intended to be used for the detection of bovine caseins/caseinates and milk proteins in a wide range of raw and cooked foods. It can also be used to detect the presence of bovine content in dairy products from other species. This market leading product offers the highest available level of analytical performance and is validated for a wide range of samples including (milk/dairy free)chocolate, spreads, processed foods etc.

Testing for the presence of casein in foods is important due to the potential for casein and other milk proteins to act as an allergen in sensitive individuals, especially children. Testing is also performed because caseins and milk proteins, in their various forms have valuable functional properties and food manufacturers may need to monitor for their presence to deliver the required characteristics to processed foods.

Suitable to test for the presence of casein/caseinate/milk protein/partially hydrolysed milk preparations in raw, cooked or processed foods, raw materials, baby food, environmental swabs* etc.

The improved BioKits Casein Assay Kit offers

  • Highest sensitivity available
  • LOD <1ppm; LOQ <2-25 ppm**
  • BIOKITS Validated method
  • Reliable results aid analytical decisions
  • Ease of use
  • Less effort & training required
  • Versatility
  • Applicable for many raw/cooked foods
  • Flexibility
  • Cost effective for small numbers of tests

*Using the BIOKITS Allergen Swabbing Kit (Cat. No. 901042J).
**LOD = Limit of Detection; LOQ = Limits of Quantitation at nominal extraction and dilution ratios. LOQ equivalent to _2-30ppm milk protein and _8-120ppm milk solids/powder. Lower/higher LOQ are possible by altering nominal ratios.

    Principle of the Assay:

the kit utilises antibodies to bovine casein, coated onto microwells, in an indirect, competitive immunoassay (ELISA). Casein from a sample extract competes with biotinylated casein for binding sites on the microwell. The presence of biotinylate is then determined using avidinperoxidase (HRP) reagent and TMB substrate. The BIOKITS Casein Assay is a sensitive and specific test for casein, caseinate and milk proteins in the presence of other animal and vegetable proteins.
